INFLUENCE OF TELEVISION, EDUCATIONAL AND ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMS ON YOUNG VIEWERS IN AREA OF CULTURAL TRANSLATION

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on Influence of Television, Educational and Entertainment Programs on Young views in area of cultural translation in Nasarawa state. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the educational and entertainment television program that promote cultural translation in Nasarawa State, examine the educational and entertainment benefits of the program on young viewers in area of cultural translation in Nasarawa State, and find out the factors that hinder viewers from watching educational and entertainment television programs that promote cultural translation in Nasarawa State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of residents of Nasarawa state who are viewers of Splash program in Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS). In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 229 respondents while 215 were received and 210 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency and percentage tables, as well as mean and standard deviation tables. The result of the findings revealed that the educational and entertainment benefits of splash program on young viewers in area of cultural translation in Nasarawa State is that Splash program in a way promote cultural translation because they sometimes show some things that represents the rich cultural diversity of Nasarawa State, like showcasing traditional music, dance, storytelling, art, and other forms of cultural expression from different ethnic groups within the state; Splash program sometimes they talk about history, traditions, and customs of Nasarawa State's various ethnic groups; Splash program also have like interviews with cultural experts, demonstrations of traditional crafts, or explanations of symbolic rituals; and that Splash program connect the listeners to the various languages spoken in Nasarawa State by providing subtitles or translations when showing performances or interviews in different languages for the duration of the program. In regard to the findings, the study recommended that NBS should develop and implement targeted awareness campaigns to inform the public about the educational and entertainment value of programs like Splash in promoting cultural translation. Utilize various media channels, community events, and partnerships with local organizations to reach a wider audience in Nasarawa State.
